What if..

It is revealed that Eddie’s mother was somehow responsible for his brother’s death.

Eddie was an only child for nine years before his baby brother came into the picture.  He never thought that another child would come into the household.  His mother used to be fine, from what he could remember. She had always wanted to be a writer.  Ever since Eddie’s birth she had been working on her “masterpeice,” the great work that would give her a name for herself.  She was a well-known woman, but she had always been known as the daughter of Edward Malone, the oil tycoon, and in her later life as the wife of Charles, the famous politician.  Something changed when the baby was born.  Something so profound that even nine year old Eddie noticed.  She was so secluded, ignored her new born babies cries.  She spent all her time writing.  Torn pages were strown allover her office; you couldn’t even make out the floor.  One night after the nanny Maria had gone home due to a family emergency, she had been left all alone with this newborn she didn’t know.  He just kept crying.  She was a stranger.  A mad-eyed witch that just stood there and glared at him as he shrieked and squirmed.  She shook him too hard.  She didn’t know what she was doing; she was in a trance.  I tried to stop her.  I kicked her punched her….”No” “Stop” I screamed.  She wouldn’t stop.  He died.

Eddie and Ethyl’s relationship goes too far.

To a foreign eye Eddie and Ethyl would look like complete opposites.  Eddie is sixteen.   The disgrutled teenager; the one that ignores human interaction.  Ethyl is a housewife, a mother.  She has a son that is two years older than Eddie, and one that is two years younger.  Although the two live different lives something brings them together, and that something cannot be defined as anything else than fear.  They both fear the woorld around them.  Eddie fears his mother, he is the only one that knows her secret.  He is surprised she hasnt come to kill him.  He sees her mad eyes when he closes his eyes at night.  Ethyl fears everything.  She doesn’t understand why.  She has a caring husband, content children, and a good household; however, she finds herself afraid to speak, afraid to leave, afraid to tell them all that they are just dumb men ith petty dreams and foolish aspirations (they want to own a pizza empire)  What if Eddie falls in love with Ethyl?  How will she respond?

There actually is a happy ending to this extremely morbid story.

I think that his relationship with Ethyl is going to help him.  They both are so afraid maybe talking with one another will enable them to resolve these fears.  What if Eddie is able to gain the courage to stand up against his mother?  He can get off the pills so he has a clear view of his surroundings, and maybe then he will realize that she cannot harm him more than he is harming himself.  He needs to tell the world his brother’s story.  I don’t know what will happen between Eddie and Ethyl just yet, but I am certain the two will learn more about the world from one another.

The night was one he would never forget.  He sits on his twin bed clenching his Star War’s blanket.  The door of the room is closed, it is dark.  The baby is crying.  He just wants to run to the cradle, place his hand on his baby brother’s head, stroke the fine hair, sing him a lulaby.  But shes in there.  He can make out her footsteps as she marches back and forth across the room.  She is screaming into the the receiver of the telephone.  Maria, the nanny is nowhere to be found.  His mother is speaking broken-spanish…”Donde Maria?”  She yells.  He hears the phone slam, she lets out a groan.  She is a banchee.  He has had enough.  He throws off his blanket and run to the baby’s room.  The door is open a crack.  Lights are flickering from within, like in a horror film.  When he works up the courage to go in she already has him in her arms.  Who is this woman?  Her hair is wild, her eyes even crazier.  Her hands are bloody from all the paper cuts she hads endured from months of laboring over her “masterpeice” of writing.  He is limp in her large bony hands.  She shakes him.  “Be quiet!”  She is yelling, demonlike.  He runs over, punches her, kicks her.  She cannot be stopped.  He is only a little boy.  She killed his baby brother.  They covered it all up.  My father, he pretended the baby never existed.  Mother went to live in a pleasant place aka a first-class home for the clinically insane.  The baby never existed…but I can’t get his face out of my mind.
